Two Japanese men — Kenji Gotō and Haruna Yukawa — were captured by the terrorist group ISIS, and a video of the two hostages was revealed last week. The terrorists demanded US$200 million within 72 hours in exchange for the men's release, and the deadline for the exchange was 2:50 p.m. JST (12:50 a.m. EST) last Friday. The Japanese government later received a photograph, purportedly of Gotō holding a photograph of Yukawa's body. The captors then changed their demands, asking for the release of Iraqi Female Prisoner Sajida al-Rishawi in Jordan in exchange for the release of both Gotō and Jordanian pilot Moaz al-Kasasbeh.

A commercial for the 10-Oku-En Big (1-Billion-Yen Big) soccer lottery stopped airing due to the hostage crisis. The commercial, which had been airing since October, included a character similarly named Gotō and the dialogue line, "The deadline's approaching."
