Wind Rises, Madoka Magica, Momo Submitted for Oscar Nominations

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced on Tuesday that 19 films have been submitted for consideration in the Animated Feature Film category for the 86th Academy Awards to be held on March 2, 2014. A Letter to Momo have been submitted for nomination.
The other 16 films submitted for nomination include:
- Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2
- The Croods
- Despicable Me 2
- Epic
- Ernest and Celestine
- The Fake
- Free Birds
- Frozen
- Khumba
- The Legend of Sarila
- Monsters University
- O Apóstolo
- Planes
- Rio: 2096 A Story of Love and Fury
- The Smurfs 2
- Turbo
The list includes films that have not yet held their Oscar-qualifying run in Los Angeles. The nominees will be announced on January 16, 2014. The academy allows up to five nominations in this category if 16 or more films are submitted and accepted; if only 13 to 15 films are accepted, the academy will allow only a maximum of four nominations; if only eight to 12 films are accepted, the academy will allow only a maximum of two to three nominations.

No anime was nominated.
Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli's submitted for the same category for the 81st Academy Awards; both were eventually accepted in the category but were not nominated.
The first time that five animated features were nominated in the category was in 2002, when Miyazaki's won in the Best Animated Short Film category at the 81st Annual Academy Awards in 2009.
